Dysphoric Highway (Chapter 5)

The truth is that I wasn’t designed to move on, and maybe this “thinking” could be beneficial if I managed to control it, next morning I started making the preparations.

I needed to get to Mendez and guide the conversation in a way he would give me the address where Gina was held without noticing, after that I needed to sneak into Gina’s room, take her with me to a far unknown place, tell I was sorry and convince her to stay with me, unleash her (I’m not stupid, she could run away at any moment if I do it before) and let her decide.

The first point was obviously the most complicated, I needed to earn again his trust, above all, I needed to do something so meaningful he would want to thank me personally.

With the help of some people that worked with me at some point, I could know that Mendez was looking for some revenge against a hacker who stole 15% of his fortune and happened to help me in some tasks with other clients. I never cared about the information I had, but it turned out to be useful.

He was a good guy, in another time, in another moment, I wouldn’t have hesitated, now was different, I must admit the thought of her wife alone after taking him away from her, distracted me for some minutes, nevertheless I did as I had to, nothing is completely free after all.

I informed Mendez guys, delivered the prey and waited for the call, it didn’t take much time to hear from him.

  • I’m happy you are back, I honestly thought you had lost your touch… Well, I shouldn’t do it, but since you’ve made a valuable action for the organization and specially for me, I’d like you to come to my house tonight, I’m throwing a reunion with my most loyal members, have a drink with us-

Check

Now the game is on.

The plan for tonight is to get information, hence I need to have fun (controlled fun) and drop the right words at the right moments and everything will be just fine.

As soon as I get into the mansion, I can smell the scent of power, it’s a surprise to find some politicians and famous entrepreneurs consuming poison from the same cask, some attendants look at my footwear and immediately ignore my presence, as if I were just a pawn in a king’s banquet.

I go to get a drink and Mendez finds me in the hallway, greets me with lots of energy and takes me to the center to make a toast. Makes an introduction and shows off telling how loyal his people are, narrating how he could get the atrocious hacker thanks to your protagonist and how necessary is to have people like your narrator inside the organization. Cheers everybody!

  • I have a “little meeting”, after I finish I’ll be with you, enjoy the party-

It’s funny, once the toast finishes, a quantity of people suddenly have some interest in my persona, we chit chat about everything and nothing at the same time, while our glasses get in this situation where they never are full or empty, the waiters serve the liquid quickly, but our drinking ability competes with their speed. Everybody starts feeling the amusement of the substances when Mendez comes back with a reddish witty face and takes me out to join him with another drink.

He thanks me again, tells me that my last gift was a game changer and begins to explain me how the organization is right now, the future with all its components working perfectly “just like a clock” and how he wants me to administrate his hostage’s division, that’s the signal.

I begin to show him interest, ask him about the everyday operation and the locations, and… as an example trying to get an explanation of great great sir tipsy Mendezian, I ask him about Gina and her location putting it in my random witticism, it couldn’t have ended better. We keep talking until a herd of 20 girls of every weight, height and breast, enter the house. The “boss” tells me to have fun and I go to choose my treat.

Who am I to deny the presents from the creator?

This story is like a blueprint and each chapter has scenes that could be expanded either as a screenplay or a book. I like the bit about the waiters refilling glasses. Reminds me of work when our company threw a party to celebrate that we’d got an Investors in People Award. The food was late and every time I drained my wineglass it mysteriously refilled. Of course on an empty stomach that meant we all got roaring drunk by the time the food came. It was great finger buffet stuff.
We got banned forever from the venue.
